Day One Hundred and Six: Chacaltaya
May 5, 2012Weather: very cold, and fairly warm.
Money: $23
We had a lovely day being tourists in La Paz today. We booked a tour to Moon Valley yesterday and got collected at 8am. They told us that Moon Valley was 7km from town, and so we expected a short drive. But, apparently, we also did a mountain called Chacaltaya which was amazing. La Paz is at an altitude of 3600m, which is insanely high. It’s the highest capital city in the world. Today’s mountain was 5000m. The altitude makes us feel a bit crazy and it gives us a swollen brain. So,we just have to be a bit slow.
Anyway, the mountain was amazing. The road up was very precarious and I found myself clinging title to the seat to avoid dying. We took a big bus up, and it was scary. Photo overload coming:
The second part of the tour took us to Moon Valley or valley de la Luna. These rock formations are made of sediment from a river that was apparently there 9000 years ago. It really does look like the moon though!
The scenery here is amazing. I can’t believe how mountainous and epic such a big city is. It’s really beautiful. Ahh. Tomorrow we might go get ourselves a llama fetus or something!

That looks spectacular.
